MIKE CROSS
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS
THE SHADY GROVE BAND
September 8, 2007  7:30 PM

MIKE CROSS
There was a time when only a handful of students and alumni in Chapel Hill, NC, showed up faithfully when entertainer Mike Cross played a local club.

Now, thirteen albums, numerous network radio and television appearances and hundreds of concerts later, things are rapidly changing. Whether he is appearing at Symphony Hall in Boston or an outdoor music festival in California, people across the country look forward to seeing their favorite fiddling storyteller and sharing the fun with friends.

THE SHADY GROVE BAND
From the Netherlands to Napa, from Calgary to the Carolinas, The Shady Grove Band has made a tradition of delighting audiences with its unique “new-timey” bluegrass sound. "One of our state's musical treasures," says the Raleigh News and Observer of The Shady Grove Band, whose accomplishments in more than two decades of touring and performing include nationwide appearances on CBS and NBC television, 13 concert tours of Europe, and six CDs that have received airplay literally all over the world. The band is comprised of founding members Jerry Brown, guitar, vocals), and Charles Pettee (mandolin, vocals), along with Adael Shinn (upright bass, vocals), and John Boulding (banjo, dobro, vocals) who together have entertained countless kids and adults from North Carolina to the Lincoln Center in New York City.

NORTH CAROLINA DANCE THEATRE
AMERICAN MASTERPIECES

October 1, 2007  7:30 PM

Night Creature, Alvin Ailey

Who Cares?, George Balanchine

Nine Sinatra Songs, Twyla Tharp

In American Masterpieces, the internationally lauded North Carolina Dance Theatre performs some of the best American choreography of the century. Included in the program are masterpieces by Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine and Twyla Tharp.

Night Creature

One of Alvin Ailey’s classic works, Night Creature features sensual movements that evoke nocturnal characters. The dancers perform striking, jazzy movements that climax in a stunning finale. Night Creature is propelled by the exuberance of Duke Ellington’s symphonic score.  North Carolina Dance Theatre has been chosen as the first and only American company to perform Night Creature other than the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Who Cares?
When George Balanchine created Who Cares? on the New York City Ballet in 1969, front and center was North Carolina Dance Theatre’s own Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride, a former New York City Ballet principal dancer and international star of American ballet. Who Cares? has grown into a wildly popular Balanchine ballet, which is performed to over a dozen George Gershwin songs, including "I Got Rhythm," "The Man I Love," "Embraceable You" and "My One and Only." The songs are not meant to evoke any particular era, but to portray an energy that is both broadly American and characteristic of Manhattan. “Fascinating Rhythm” and the pas de deux “The Man I Love” were both choreographed on Patricia McBride. She and her husband, New York City Ballet former principal dancer and current North Carolina Dance Theatre Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, performed “The Man I Love” with New York City Ballet many times throughout the country.

Nine Sinatra Songs

Twyla Tharp’s Tony-Award-winning talents are showcased in her classic Nine Sinatra Songs. This work presents a view of 1950s social dancing through the nostalgic and yet sharpened eyes of the 1980s. The timeless tunes of Ol’ Blue Eyes, paired with costumes designed by Oscar de la Renta, flash with the glamour of past and present ages. Each dancer in the work has a distinct personality, which fits well with the trademark diversity of North Carolina Dance Theatre’s dancers. Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux met Twyla Tharp in the 1980s while they were both choreographing for Olympic Champion ice-skater John Curry.

JUSTIN DAVID
IN CONCERT
November 9, 2007 7:30 PM

One of Justin David's earliest memories is of listening to his dad whistle a tune over and over, then learning to play the melody on a mandolin given to him by his grandparents. Justin was all of five years old. Music was obviously an important part of Justin's Missouri childhood. So much so that he, his brother and sister, and a friend toured throughout the mid-West for six years as the Bertoldie Family Band. During this time Justin built a solid fan base that follows him still. Between gigs, Justin entered, and often won, numerous fiddle contests. He looked at the competitions as his part-time job. Instead of mowing lawns like other boys his age, Justin earned his money besting fiddlers from across the globe. And, with the rigors of competition, a determination that still follows the personable young man was born. As a teen, Justin also became involved with the National Endowment of Arts Master Artist Apprenticeship Program, which fostered his love for traditional fiddle music, and which he incorporates into his contemporary country sound whenever possible. After graduating from high school, the many theaters of Branson, Missouri beckoned, so Justin set out to see if he could find work playing music there. Little did he know he would work virtually non-stop for the next four years. "I worked seven days a week with the Braschler Music Show and various bands at Silver Dollar City," said Justin, smiling. "It was a great time for me because I logged four- to five thousand performances and began to find my own as a performer and entertainer." more.......

PERCY SLEDGE
May 16, 2008 7:30 PM

If you mention the name Percy Sledge to just about any music fan in the world, you'll invariably elicit a woebegone version of "When A Man Loves A Woman." That song is Percy's signature and a tune that defined the summer of 1966 and every one thereafter. Percy Sledge is, however, far from a one-hit wonder. He's had a number of significant chart hits including "Take Time To Know Her," "Warm And Tender Love," "Out Of Left Field, "It Tears Me Up," "I'll Be Your Everything" and others; his is a successful career that is now in its fifth decade.Nine years ago, Percy made a comeback album that received worldwide critical acclaim, solid sales, a Grammy® nomination and won The Blues Foundation's WC Handy Award for best Soul/Blues Album of the Year. It was Blue Night, an album produced by the team of Saul Davis -- who had worked on projects by Gene Clark, Mick Taylor, Lucinda Williams, Phil Seymour, Jackie Lomax, etc. -- and Barry Goldberg (Mother Earth, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, Solomon Burke, Bob Dylan, etc.) that brilliantly showcased Percy's commanding yet emotionally plaintive vocal attitude. The wonderful reception accorded Blue Night, combined with Percy's being awarded the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award showed that, the eternal "When A Man Loves A Woman" notwithstanding, Percy Sledge was back in the forefront of soul's resurgence.
