FESTIVAL OF FOUR October 13, 2008 7:30 PM This virtuoso quartet is indeed a “world” of music on a single stage. Guillermo Rios is an unusually passionate flamenco guitarist and plays with an exhibitionist’s flair and an underlying sense of drama. Chilean-born flutist, Viviana Guzman, has been described as “an imaginative artist”. Viviana has played in 56 countries featuring flutes from her collection of over 100 gathered from her concert tours and definitely possesses an engaging command of any flutelike instrument. Radim Zenkl, born in the Czech Republic, discovered bluegrass by listening to records that were smuggled in to his communist country. In America, Zenkl has made a name for himself becoming the U.S. National Mandolin Champion (1992) and one of the world’s premier mandolin virtuosos. Richard Patterson, founder of Festival of Four, enjoys an active international career. As a student, Patterson lived in Spain, studying the guitar in the land of its creation. He has studied personally and in master classes with virtually all of the world’s leading guitarists, including Segovia. Patterson projects a deep understanding of and admiration for the music he performs and plays with style, taste and elegance. Together these four musicians perform with sensitivity and grace, each masters of their instruments. Together they bring a “world” of musicality to the stage.

TURTLE ISLAND STRING QUARTET December 11, 2008 7:30 PM Its name derived from creation mythology found in Native American Folklore, the Turtle Island Quartet, since its inception in 1985, has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Cellist nonpareil Yo-Yo Ma has proclaimed Turtle Island to be “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground – authentic and passionate – a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” Back-to-back Grammy Award winners, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined.
